Our very first Airbnb experience was a smashing success. We stayed at Amazing View Apartment and Vina was a wonderful host. I have her personal information if anyone ever goes to Split. We were a two minute walk from all the action and had a view of the port and the city.
After having moderate temperatures for a few days, the 90’s was hot for us. Luckily we had a/c at our 2 bedroom apartment. We also had a sun porch next to the kitchen – no windows, just open. We would sit outside to watch the boats sometimes, but have to retreat to the air conditioning after 10-15 minutes.
We had dinner at a restaurant I had looked up, ma: Toni (Konoba Matoni). It was in a cellar, so it was cool and quaint. I had one of the best meals and discovered what might be my new favorite food – tuna steak. The best meal I’ve had in a long time. Possibly a highlight of the trip.
Walked along the promenade watching all the tourists, listening to live music. I love how so many people stroll at night. All ages out and about in the world, seeing and being seen.
The old town of Split is inside the Diocletian Palace walls. Instead of having a tourist site that you walk through once looking at empty buildings, the palace is inhabited by hotels, shops, and restaurants. The labyrinth of streets have dining tables everywhere, even in little alleys! The streets are made of marble and stone. The cruise ships had already left when we were strolling, but it was still packed with people!
I didn’t take any pictures of Splits charm because we were always in motion, there were tons of people, and most of the buildings are all very close to each other. Here are a token bell tower and square to give you an idea:
Our second dinner in Split was at No Stress Bistro, next to town hall on Narodni square. The chef was supposed to be one of the hottest new things in town. We thought it was a bit overpriced and it was difficult to be impressed after the previous night. Octopus salad with chickpeas for me, steak for dad. The octopus was good but the salad part was bland. The steak was different than anything we would consider steak – I think it was a cut we weren’t used to, prepared in a way we weren’t used to. It was nice to sit out on the square and people watch though.
